Poem

The hope I dreamed of was a dream,
Was but a dream; and now I wake,
Exceeding comfortless, and worn, and old,
For a dream’s sake.

I hang my harp upon a tree,
A weeping willow in a lake;
I hang my silent harp there, wrung and snapped
For a dream’s sake.

Lie still, lie still, my breaking heart;
My silent heart, lie still and break:
Life, and the world, and mine own self, are changed
For a dream’s sake.

Short Poem Analysis

"Mirage" by Christina Georgina Rossetti is a reflective and contemplative poem that explores the transient nature of human desires and the illusory nature of material pursuits. Through its vivid imagery and introspective tone, the poem conveys a sense of disillusionment and warns against becoming too attached to earthly pleasures.

The poem describes a mirage—a visual phenomenon where something appears to be present but is actually an illusion caused by atmospheric conditions. This mirage is compared to a "fountain's silver jet," suggesting a fleeting and ethereal quality.

Rossetti uses the imagery of the mirage to draw a parallel with the allure of worldly possessions and desires. The mirage's resemblance to valuable and beautiful things underscores the idea that what seems attractive and desirable may not be as substantial as it appears.

The phrase "though none shall heed" implies that despite the allure of the mirage, it ultimately goes unnoticed and unattained. This emphasizes the fleeting nature of human desires and how they can lead to disappointment when they remain unfulfilled.

The poem's introspective tone and contemplative language invite readers to reflect on the nature of their own desires and attachments. It serves as a cautionary reminder about the impermanent and illusory nature of material pursuits.

"Mirage" is a poem that urges readers to look beyond the surface and question the true value of their desires. Through its imagery and reflective themes, the poem encourages a deeper understanding of the transience of human pursuits and the importance of seeking meaning and fulfillment beyond the temporary allure of worldly possessions.
