Anne Sexton
9 November 1928 - 4 October 1974
American poet and playwright known for her confessional poetry style. She was born in Newton, Massachusetts, and studied at Garland Junior College and Boston University. Sexton began writing poetry in the 1950s and had her first collection, "To Bedlam and Part Way Back," published in 1960. She went on to publish several more collections of poetry, including "Live or Die" which won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Sexton's work often dealt with themes of mental illness, death, and domesticity. She struggled with severe depression throughout her life and died by suicide in 1974. Her work continues to be widely studied and celebrated for its raw, honest portrayal of personal experience.
